I have always been struck on the odd fact that scientists are thought to be wise across the board and are consulted on all sorts of moral and political issues when, in fact, they may well have spent their lives looking down a microscope or pouring A into B. Of course, they increasingly manage large enterprises as they become more eminent. Anyway, this essay contains some of my cautionary thoughts on this phenomenon.
