Robert M. Young Online Writings'Freud: Scientist and/or Humanist' 83k. This is a talk I gave to the Group for the History of the Human Sciences, Durham University in (I think) 1985. This group led to the creation of the journal History of the Human Sciences. I set out to look at the deepest historical, historiographic and philosophical issues concerning psychoanalysis which I have been able to make any sense of. In the course of the essay I mounted a severe criticism of the version of Freud on offer in Frank Sulloway's Freud: Biologist of the Mind, which sought to co-opt Freud for biology, whereas I see him as a Janus-like figure - hence my title. It was published in Free Associations 6:7-35, 1986. |
